Nusa Islan New Ireland Papua New Guinea

The Retreat is located on Nusa Island just across the scenic harbour from Kavieng, which is situated at the northern end of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea.

New Ireland is an idyllic South Pacific province that lies well off the coast of mainland Papua New Guinea and forms part of the Bismarck Archipelago.

Dutch explorers discovered New Ireland in the 1500's and it was 1877 when the first missionaries arrived. The development of copra plantations soon followed and it became one of Germany's most profitable colonies. During World War II, Kavieng and New Ireland fell to the Japanese and many of the island's towns, infrastructure and industry were destroyed.

Nowadays though, New Ireland is an island paradise of sandy white beaches, coral encrusted lagoons, clear springs, flowing rivers and soaring mountains that run the entire length of the island. The locals are warm and friendly Melanesian people - most being fairly religious in orientation and English is widely spoken and understood, particularly by the young to middle aged. A road links north to south and is mostly made from crushed coral but travel is easier by banana boat, especially around the many tropical islands that surround Nusa Island Retreat.

Many people’s perception of PNG is that of danger and trouble - for the most part this is not true (especially out side of major towns) but rather a media creation centring on troubles around Port Moresby, Lae and the Highlands.

Weather

Kavieng is located approx two degrees south of the equator making for a generally humid and wet environment. Average daily temperatures are high 20's to low 30's and at night low to mid 20's. Out on the island the temperature is generally a lot cooler and less humid than the mainland. Rainfall for this part of PNG is pretty evenly spread out during the year. Lightweight clothing is recommended and some protection from the sun.

Malaria

There is malaria in the area, however whether or not you take the malaria tablets is completely up to you. We recommend getting in touch with your local GP, Naturopath, Homeopath or someone whose advice that you trust, and go with that. Generally speaking, you will hardly notice mosquitoes in and around the retreat, however mosquito nets are provided on all beds.
