Papua
New Guinea boasts excellent fishing, and is one of the last
unspoilt fishing frontiers left in the world today. The waters
that surround Nusa Island offer plenty of challenges and opportunities
for the keen sports fisherman. Many ocean fish are in local
waters all year round because the climate doesn't change much,
so any time is the right time for fishing.
Blue and black marlin, sailfish and dogtooth tuna live in
the coastal waters off New Ireland, as do spanish mackerel,
trevally, barracuda, dolphin fish, red emperor, mangrove jacks,
barramundi rock cod and coral trout!
During your stay on Nusa Island you will no doubt see islanders
in their dugouts heading out to their favourite fishing grounds.
Nusa Island Retreat regularly buys freshly caught seafood
from the locals to cook in the restaurant at night.
Fishing trips can be arranged and fishing gear / tackle can
be hired from Nusa Island Retreat during your stay.
Nusa Island Retreat also provides rod and tackle hire. Currently
there are six Shimano TLD 25 for hire along with an assortment
of lures to 'match the hatch'. Nusa Island Retreat has a policy,
that any tackle damaged or lost, will be charged at replacement
cost.
For the serious fisherman, it is encouraged that you bring
your own equipment to match the style of fishing you require.
The benefit of this, is that you know your expectations and
the limitations of your own gear. A variety of hard bodied
minnows ( i.e rapala ) in assorted colours and sizes will
put you in good stead.....the most popular colours being the
'Qantas' ( red/white ) and the 'Blu Pilly' ( blue/silver ).
Oh Yeah, don't forget the wire trace......the 'Razor Gang'
will be all too happy to add to their collection of lures!
Please note. You will be in the tropics. So bring a wide-bream
hat, long sleeve light cotton shirt and plenty of sunscreen!!
